Garlic Cheese Buns

Yummmmmmmmm! They sell these cheese buns in Sarnia (my hometown in Canada) that are just the most amazing things in the entire world, and I just cannot seem to find anything even remotely similar in Texas. I might have more luck when I move to San Diego in April, but until then, I have decided to try and come up with my own recipe for some delicious cheese buns. These ones are a mixture of a few different recipes I came across, and they aren’t the same thing as the ones I am ultimately trying to create at all, but I figured that I needed to start somewhere. I don’t even know for sure what kind of cheese to use so it’s going to be a process getting there.

I kept coming across recipes online for cheese buns with a delicious gob of cheese in the center, and I decided that I had to try that. I had minimal success with this. I think that I did not pinch the dough closed enough around the cheese in the center because it just sort of spilled out everywhere. There’s nothing wrong with that though because baked cheese gets all crunchy and is my favourite. I would definitely make these again, but next time I might try just adding shredded cheese to the actual dough instead of putting some in the center.
Garlic Cheese Buns
1 cup warm water
2 teaspoons sugar
1 packet rapid rise yeast
2 teaspoons garlic salt
1/4 cup olive oil
2 cups all-purpose flour
16 small cubes sharp cheddar cheese
1/2 cup shredded cheddar cheese
1/2 cup shredded colby jack cheese
1/4 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
1/3 cup melted butter
Garlic powder and salt for topping

Combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast in the bowl of a stand mixer and let stand for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
Add the garlic salt and olive oil and begin mixing on low. Add the flour, one cup at a time, mixing until a smooth dough forms. You will want to turn the mixer up to high and let it go for 5 to 10 minutes.
Put the dough into a bowl coated with olive oil, cover, and let sit in a warm place for an hour to an hour and a half until doubled in size.
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Divide the dough into 16 equal pieces. Place a cube of cheddar in the center of each and pinch the dough closed around it. Roll into a ball and put on a cookie sheet covered with parchment paper.
Brush each roll with the melted butter and sprinkle some coarse salt and garlic powder on the top of each. Mix together all of the shredded cheese and press a small handful onto each roll (it will look like a mess).

Bake for 15-17 minutes or until golden brown and the cheese is bubbling.

Just made these and am eating them right now. They’re so good! I was a little worried since the recipe didn’t indicate that the dough balls had to rise a 2nd time as most bread recipes do but it they turned out so well. I was lazy and dumped the ingredients into my bread machine to make the dough and they still turned out. Thank you!!

Oh good, I’m glad they worked out for you! Yeah I actually thought about letting them rise again, but they really puffed up when baking.
