Watermelon Gin Fizz

DSC_3120_2Happy Canada Day!!! I had to work today because the State of California, unfortunately, does not celebrate Canada Day. I had a wonderful weekend with my husband though. I just got back from a month of traveling for work, and it is so nice to be staying at home for a while. I did just move here and all… So this weekend we went to the zoo (my favourite!), and then we had a fantastic Canada Day meal last night. I didn’t make any sort of special super secret Canadian recipes or anything, but I did come up with a delicious summertime drink that worked just perfectly for a Canada Day celebration!

Minute Maid has this really delicious watermelon juice that you can find wherever they have orange juice and such in the cold section of most grocery stores. I discovered it last year, and my favourite thing to do is to mix this juice with sprite. It is so yummy! I decided to try to turn that into a big girl drink yesterday by making it alcoholic, and my husband suggested adding gin to it. I think decided that it would be even better with actual watermelon chunks in it, and voila! We now have a watermelon gin fizz, and it is so refreshing and delightful. I highly recommend that you make this right after work…all summer long.

The recipe below is just for one drink, but the measurements are really basic so it would be easy increase the amounts.
DSC_3122_2Watermelon Gin Fizz
1 ounce gin
1 ounce Minute Maid watermelon juice
2 ounces lemon-lime soda (I used Seven-Up)
Fresh watermelon, cut into squares (I bought a whole watermelon because it is delicious, but you can buy pre-cut packages of watermelon)
Ice

Combine the gin, watermelon juice, and soda in a cocktail shaker and shake until combined. I would put the ice in the shaker as well and then strain the drink into a glass. I didn’t think of that when I made these so I just added ice to the actual drink, which turned out just fine. Add a couple cubes of watermelon to the glass and enjoy!
