Powdered Donuts
Ingredients:
- 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 cup sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- Pinch of nutmeg
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup milk
- 2 teaspoons vinegar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/2 cup melted butter
- 1 cup powdered sugar, for tossing
Instructions:
- Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. and grease a mini or regular donut pan.
- Stir together the milk and vinegar and set aside for about 5 minutes while you prepare the other ingredients. This will cause the milk to curdle and will essentially create a homemade buttermilk.
- Whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, salt and nutmeg in a small bowl.
- In a separate bowl, whisk the egg, curdled milk mixture, vanilla extract and melted butter until smooth.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry and stir, just until combined. It is ok if there are a few streaks of flour. You do not want to over mix.
- Use a ziploc bag with the corner cut off to pipe the donut batter into the prepared donut pan, filling each about 3/4 of the way. Do not over fill, or the hole in the center will fill in when baking.
- Bake at 350 degrees F. for 8-10 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. If using a regular sized donut pan instead of a mini, add about 2 minutes to the baking time.
- Let the donuts cool for a few minutes in the pan before turning out onto a wire rack to continue cooling.
- While the donuts are still slightly warm, toss them in the powdered sugar. I like to just put it all in a sheet pan and shake it around, but you could also just roll them in a shallow dish.
